One of the most rewarding aspects of Bunkers in Baghdad is our “Bunkers Buddies” program. Our Bunkers Buddies are school children who work with us a part of community service projects to write to soldiers, hold equipment drives and fundraisers to send shipments of their very own out to soldiers overseas. Often these shipments are to family members of our Buddies or their classmates who are currently deployed making them even more special for the kids.
We started the program with the Williamsville Central School District in Western New York and are pleased that more schools around the country are signing up.
The four middle schools of the Williamsville Central School District in Western New York have adopted Bunkers in Baghdad as a community service project. The students are actively involved in writing letters to soldiers, decorating and packing boxes of golf balls to be shipped overseas and fundraising to sponsor the shipping costs of their boxes. Their excitement for this project and their commitment to serving others is truly inspiring.
The students of JFK Middle School in Cheektowaga, New York collected over 36,000 golf balls for Bunkers. They held several fundraisers in order to ship over 10,000 golf balls to our soldiers overseas in time for the holidays. They also took the time to package all of the golf balls and draw the soldiers pictures and holiday cards.
The students of Lexington Creek Elementary School in Houston, Texas worked together on Bunkers' behalf to collect golf balls and golf clubs for soldiers and then spent the time to package up and send out their very own Bunkers Buddies' shipment!
One of our newest schools, Pacific Beach Middle School in San Diego, California, has helped add some extra cheer to our holiday shipments. The students took the time to make special holiday cards for the troops that were included in our latest shipments.
There are many ways that your school can participate in the Bunkers Buddies program. The program is a great way to incorporate lessons about community service into your activites and it has proven to be extremely rewarding for all involved. The soldiers love receiving messages from the kids and the our Buddies get to see how they can make a difference in their community and around the world.
